A Few Brave Souls Remained
Standing between two of the only 317 survivors of the USS Indianapolis. These two men were the most humble and contrite men I think I have ever met. They took no credit as heroes, saying, “we were just kids. The ones who died were the real heroes.” The ship had just delivered critical parts for the atomic bomb on a mission that was so top secret, no one realized the ship went missing. When hit by a submarine, the ship sank in 12 minutes.
Of the 1,196, about 900 survived to face the shark infested ocean waters. When found by accident four days later, only 317 remained alive. I was so honored to stand between two men I call heroes, who dismiss the bravery of that mission and say “we were just doing the job we were called to do.” Thank you to all of those who simply did their jobs at times when that meant certain peril.
